Here’s to Mums

This weekend its Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is traditionally known. It’s a custom stretching back to medieval times, and was originally the day people returned to their local parish or ‘mother church’ where they had been baptised. In the early twentieth century it became merged into the American ‘Mother’s Day’ and now we celebrate Mums and motherhood with cards and gifts three weeks before Easter. For many it’s a lovely opportunity to thank and celebrate those who have cared and nurtured them (whether they’re actual Mums or not). For some it’s a painful reminder of lost women.

Happy swimming mums!

Whether you’re celebrating or otherwise, don’t forget that good old Mother Nature is still out there to enjoy too (see what I did there?!). It’s looking like a sunny weekend and perfect swimming weather, so maybe ‘return’ to the sea, take a spring dip and think about Mums… after all, that’s how we all got here!

Happy Mother’s Day.

  1. Lovely post! Very heartening and inclusive. We all have nurturing ‘mothers’ in our lives even or especially at the most fundamental, in Mother Nature. Thanks for the reminder.
